I have a friend who has a big need for storage. His master bedroom closet is oversized, so we thought adding shelving in there would be a good idea. Unfortunately, I didn't get a before picture but you can just use your imagination. There was a shelf around the top, rails on two walls, some clothes that were hanging and then the floor was covered with tons of stuff! First, we removed all of the stuff. Then we pulled down the shelf and rods. We pulled off the supports for the rods as well and set those aside to cut down and reuse.
Next, I pulled the baseboards out and set those aside to cut down and reuse as well. Then I was able to get to work making a base and putting the walls up for the shelf.
The shelf cavity is 4 feet wide so making the shelves sturdy took a bit of work. First, I added bracing to the back. Then I used pocket holes to attach the ends of the shelves to the walls. Before I add trim to the front of them, I plan on attaching a bracing piece across the front, underneath each shelf. The bottom shelf won't need that because I built a frame for it.
To the right of the shelf unit, I attached the adapted rod brace so that I could rehang the rod. I also had to cut the rod down to size. It worked out so well!
Sadly, this is all I had time to finish for now. When I get back to it, I will be adding a shelf above the hanging rods, a shoe shelf next to the large shelf, lots of trim and one more rail halfway down for a double hanging area. Then, I will cut up and reattach the baseboard around the bottom of the shelving. I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out. It's giving me ideas for my own closet. I can't wait to find time to get back for phase 2 of my friend's closet!
Now, where's my caulk gun?
