The appliances for the basement kitchen came today. It brings the space one more step closer to feeling real. The refrigerator is plugged in and the water line is connected. The dishwasher is sitting in wait for the day I add the plumbing under the sink. I had planned on installing the microwave today but, instead, I had to take care of the stove...
When it was delivered, I asked the guy who brought it in if it was difficult to connect the cord. He said it wasn't and offered to do it for me. I've wired a dishwasher, light switches, outlets and light fixtures (including ceiling fans) before but never a stove so I said, "Sure. Thank you." It wasn't until he left, and I attempted to plug it in, that I realized this wasn't going to work out.
Uh oh.
I have never ordered a cord for a stove before and didn't realize that there are three wire cords and four wire cords. After a quick consult with the electrician, I discovered that I ordered a three wire cord and they installed a four wire outlet. So, off to the store I went to buy a new cord. Then I sat down to change out the cords and thought I'd take pictures and then write about it. It's so important for us to learn from our mistakes but even more important for us to share our mistakes with others. I often lack the confidence necessary to embark on new journeys but, when I can get a glimpse into the bumps and spills that others encounter, I feel less alone. So here's the mistake and the redo...
This is the three wire cord the delivery person installed in the back of the stove.
Here's the new, four wire, cord I bought. All I had to do was follow the instructions in the installation booklet that came with the stove. I was nervous but I knew I just needed to take it slowly and paid attention to every step.
Well, here goes! Fingers crossed!
Aw yeah! Success. Phew. Refrigerator, check. Stove, check. Microwave, next.
Now, where's my stud finder?
