OMG! There's water where it doesn't belong!

Well, isn't this just how things happen? I have family coming to visit tomorrow night and I found a waterlogged carpet in the basement guest bedroom. Ugh.

I grabbed my shop vac and got to work on pulling the water out of the carpet.

I pulled up at least a gallon of water! There was soap mixed in it. I'm guessing the carpet was cleaned before we moved in.

The corner of the room has a cabinet that contains the main water shut off and the sprinkler shut off. There's a window well to the left. I didn't find any water around the window or the corner cabinet. We had a very large storm come through today, so I'm assuming that's the culprit. I feel like there will be more to this story in the future. I will need to find out what allowed the water in. For now, I have two fans going nonstop until my guests arrive.

Now where's my wine glass?

UPDATE: I figured out what happened! After sitting in front of the TV to decompress for a bit, I decided to go back downstairs to check on things. First, I walked on the carpet and found that it was more wet than when I left it earlier. Then I went searching for where the water might be coming in. The window was definitely still dry. The drywall under the window was dry. The drywall on the other wall and on the corner bump out was dry. Then I opened the cabinet where the main water shut off and sprinkler shut off are and took a flashlight to the bottom. It was very wet and water was dripping from somewhere above! I found a small screw on cap on the underside of the pipe that looked to be where the water was coming out.

I turned the water off, pulled the cap off and screwed it back on. Then I took a wrench to it to make sure it was really tight. I turned the water back on and the dripping stopped.

Hooray! One more piece of the puzzle that makes me very curious about the people who lived in this house before us is that there is a bucket on the floor of the bump out. It seems they put it there to catch the drips but it must have been knocked away from where it could catch anything and that's why we ended up with a wet carpet. So here's another pain in the behind thing that has happened that I'm grateful for. I'm not sure how much water would have dripped into that bucket each month before it overflowed but, at the very least, it would have been a big waste of water.

Okay, back to my glass of wine.
