I am always looking to improve things. I can't help it. I see something and I envision how I would change it for the better. Maybe it comes from my constant need to streamline every day chores. Maybe it comes from a desire to squeeze every ounce of usefulness out of things. Maybe it comes from the way I grew up, watching my parents change and create things for the better using very little money. Whatever it is, I've got the bug and it's stronger than ever right now.
We just sold our first home and purchased a newer, much bigger home. It feels like we're starting from scratch. I poured so much love into that old house. It was filled with character. Our character. The new house is completely devoid of character. The walls are white. The carpets are old and worn. However, all I can see is potential. It's exciting and overwhelming to look around and envision all of the things I want to do to make it our own. I almost can't contain the desire to start every project at once. There is one project that is at the forefront at the moment and it will soon be taking up almost all of my time. I've been waiting for this week since we moved in, almost two months ago.
Tomorrow, the appliances and half of the cabinets are arriving for the kitchen we are building in the walk out basement. Before we even moved in, I designed it. It's been in my head all this time. We hired out the electrical and plumbing work because, although I have basic skills, I have no knowledge of how to do rough-in work. We also paid for an epoxy floor to be put down before the cabinets go in and it is beautiful! As my 8 year old said, "It looks like honey!"
The cabinets are white and the sink is teal! I'm so excited to put this in!
This is the first time that I've had the opportunity to design a space from beginning to end and it has awakened something in me. I've always enjoyed watching people flip houses on tv and secretly wanted to do it myself. Creating a kitchen out of nothing has helped me decide that it's something I will do one day. Before I do, I will focus on the necessary improvements to our new house. There is plenty to do and most of it will help add the all too important equity we need to secure this new investment we've made.
Now, where's my hammer?
