I'm working on renovating an entire room in my basement that includes a lot of projects to tackle. When we moved in, the room had a wall with two large closets that didn't go to the end of the room. It made it an odd shape and it made the room pretty narrow.
A while back, I created a different closet in an alcove I discovered behind another wall. In the above picture, it's the space to the left of the door.
That made the strange closet wall redundant so it was time to take it down. I started with the column in the middle since it had a light switch on it for the light in the closet. The power going to this wiring was disconnected from the last outlet in the circuit before I pulled things apart.
I eventually got the whole closet pulled down.
I was left with holes in the wall from the closet fixtures and drywall repairs to make. First, I needed to deal with the electrical wires. This entire wall is without outlets so I decided to add two of them. When I disconnected the closet light, I found that it was at the end of a circuit that included all of the other outlets in the room. I also found a plumbing stack on each side of the old closet. I guess that's why they made it where they did. It made it easier to feed the wiring through to where I wanted the outlets to go. I had to make several more holes in the wall to get the job done.
It was easy enough to patch them, along with all the holes from the closet fixtures.
Then all that was left was to install outlets in the electrical boxes that I fed the wiring through.
And, we have power on this wall now!
Of course, there's a ton of work left to do on this wall and even more in this room. I'll share as I go. For now, I'm pretty happy I accomplished a task I knew how to do but have never done completely on my own. Every new skill builds my confidence more and more.
