Sofa Table and bench

Handymeg

We have a very large loft area in our home, just outside of the bedrooms upstairs, that is the perfect spot for a projector. The whole room is a work in progress with a lot left to do but, in the meantime, I wanted to create a bit more seating for when we have people over and want to use the room. I looked at a lot of different ideas on Pinterest but decided to just create my own design. I'm starting to feel more and more comfortable with drawing out my plans ahead of time.

I thought through every detail over and over again and didn't realize that I calculated the depth pieces at 14" when they needed to be 12". This caused a problem when creating the top but I found a creative way to fix it. It was really nice to know exactly how much I needed to buy and how I needed to cut each piece.

I started with the table by putting the sides together and then connecting them with the long pieces.

Next, I connected the boards for the top with Kreg Jig holes.

That's when I realized I messed up the length of the depth pieces on the frame. The top boards, connected, aren't wide enough to cover the top of the frame. If I hadn't connected all of the pieces of the frame with kreg jig holes, I could have cut them down to make the depth fit the top. However, I couldn't cut them down so I decided to create raised piece at the back AND I added outlets with USB ports on it.

I really like how it turned out and I'm glad that I messed up!

For the bench, I just repeated the whole process but made it shorter and less wide. I also added a few more brace pieces since people will be sitting on it.

Last summer, I made a cabinet for a microwave, mini-fridge and tilt out trash can for our family room. It now has a prominent place in the loft in our new house, where this sofa table and bench are going. I painted the cabinet red with a light green top. I plan on painting these new pieces the exact same colors. One day, I will finish the room and take more pictures. For now, we have more seating!

Now, where's my jigsaw?
