Storage Woes

Handymeg

When we decided to buy this new house, all I saw was how much more living space we would have. We have gained 2,000 sq. ft. That's incredible! What I didn't see was that the garage had absolutely zero storage space. I mean, it's a three car garage so there's tons of room but, if all three cars are parked inside, there's nothing left. We wouldn't even be able to set up a 24" deep set of shelves while still being able to get into the cars from inside. One area where there is space is up above. The ceiling height is incredible. I knew I had to make use of it if I ever wanted to actually park the cars in there.

I started off by looking at storage systems I could buy and install but quickly became disheartened by the cost. I have far too many other things I need to spend money on in setting up the whole house so there's nothing left for the garage. Eventually, I decided to come up with a way to use all of my wood scraps to make something. That would save money and cut back on all of the stuff that was laying around needing to be stored somewhere. Luckily, I have lots of off cuts of 2 x 4s and OSB boards. Today, I got started.

This seemed like a good place to start.

I decided on zones. This is the furthest corner of the garage and I thought it would be best to store the things we hardly ever use. This is where the camping gear will live.

First, I started making brackets. I measured my storage bins and decided on 17" deep. I cut two 2 x 4s to 17". Then I cut 45 degree angles on each end of another 2 x 4.

Then I just made a triangle.

Next, it was time to start attaching them to the wall.

Once I had two of them up, I measured from the middle of one to the middle of the next one. Leaving half of the bracket empty means I could just continue setting OSB boards between each one.

Then I started loading them up!

I have a lot more space to fill with brackets and boards and I have a lot more material but, for now, the camping gear is off the ground! I will continue, here and there, when I have time. I'm looking forward to being able to park in here one day!

Now, where's my drill?
