Window Trim!

Handymeg

I know I keep saying this but our new house is so vanilla. All the walls are white. The trim is white. The carpets are beige. Everything is builder grade. One easy way to combat that is window trim. We also need all new windows but that's another project for another day (and another many thousand dollars since there are so many windows!).

I decided to give it a try on the kitchen window first. It stands alone and it won't look odd being the only one done. I already have 1x4s and 1x6's but I had to get creative for the 1x2. When I measured the wall on each side of the window, I discovered that the window is slightly off-center. One side is just under 3.5". The other side is just over 3.5".

For the smaller side, I decided to pull the trim off of the cabinet to make more room for the window trim.

That made each side more even.

Next, I cut all of the pieces and painted them before putting them up. It's so much easier to paint trim before it goes up! The space here is all white between medium dark cabinets. I knew that painting the trim white would make it less noticeable.

Instead, I chose my favorite yellow color, lemon meringue. I had this color on every wall of the main areas of our last house. It made me so happy. I was excited to use it again.

I put the 1x4s on the sides, the 1x6 on the top and then the 1x2 on top of that.

It seemed to be lacking something since it just stops right at the top of the tile backsplash. That worked out well for my second plan for this window. I have some plants and glass bottles that I like to put in the window and I don't like them on the windowsill. I knew I wanted to put some sort of shelving up and realized that I could kill two birds with one stone by putting the shelf across the bottom of the trim.

The problem was that the shelf was sagging. It turned out this piece was too wimpy to use as a shelf. I used a 1x4. I decided I needed to use something bigger. It was time for a do-over. I used a 1x6 instead.

I absolutely love how this turned out! I love the color. I love the shelf. I love the brackets. I love that I can display my glasses and plants in a place other than the windowsill. I cannot wait to add trim to more of my windows!

Now where's my nail gun?
